The new United Nations Resident Coordinator in Azerbaijan, Dmytro Shlapachenko, presented his credentials to H.E. Ilham Aliyev, President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, on 2 September in Baku. The meeting provided an opportunity to discuss the longstanding partnership between Azerbaijan and the United Nations, as well as areas for continued cooperation in support of the country’s sustainable development priorities. President Ilham Aliyev highlighted Azerbaijan’s active engagement with the United Nations and its role as host to major UN international events, including the 29th Conference of Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29) and the 13th session of the World Urban Forum (WUF13), contributing to advancing sustainable development and international cooperation. Dmytro Shlapachenko expressed his appreciation for the close collaboration between Azerbaijan and the UN system and commended the country’s support for the work of various United Nations entities. “Azerbaijan has established itself as an important partner of the United Nations and a host of significant global events that advance international cooperation on sustainable development, climate action and urban development,” said Dmytro Shlapachenko, United Nations Resident Coordinator in Azerbaijan. “The United Nations stands ready to continue supporting Azerbaijan’s development priorities and to work alongside government institutions, civil society, academia, private sector and development partners to help build a more resilient, inclusive and sustainable future.” Discussions also focused on the extensive reconstruction and recovery efforts underway in the Karabakh and East Zangezur economic regions, and the significant challenges of landmine contamination. Mr. Shlapachenko emphasized the UN’s continued commitment to support national efforts, including for mine action, through expertise and international experience. Mr. Shlapachenko also informed the President of his upcoming visit to Karabakh with the diplomatic corps and a plan to organize a SDG localization event at Karabakh University on the occasion of this year’s United Nations Day.  The meeting further discussed environmental issues related to climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution, including the importance of transboundary water cooperation to address these challenges. The United Nations remains committed to supporting Azerbaijan in its efforts to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals and to advancing partnerships that contribute to sustainable, resilient and inclusive development for all while leaving no one behind.
