UN Climate Change High-Level Champion for COP29 engages Europe and Central Asia in dialogue on just transition

18 September 2024

As part of the "29 Climate Conversations: The Road to COP29" series, UN Azerbaijan hosted a significant virtual dialogue on accelerating a just transition, focusing on aligning the private sector with national climate action plans.

The event, co-organized by the ILO Regional Office for Europe and Central Asia, the UN Development Coordination Office for Europe and Central Asia, and the UN Resident Coordinator’s Office in Azerbaijan, brought together stakeholders from employers’ and workers’ organizations across Europe and Central Asia.

The dialogue emphasized the crucial role that the private sector plays in advancing sustainable practices and achieving the targets of the upcoming COP29. Key discussions centered on ensuring an inclusive and equitable shift to a low-carbon economy, with a focus on engaging marginalized groups in the transition.

Ms. Nigar Arpadarai, the UN Climate Change High-Level Champion for COP29, highlighted opportunities for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), women entrepreneurs, and vulnerable populations to benefit from the green transition. She encouraged collaboration between employers and workers to implement fair policies and sustainable innovations that align with Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and global climate goals.

This dialogue, the 22nd in the "29 Climate Conversations" series, provided a valuable platform for exchanging ideas and strategies to ensure a transformative and inclusive shift towards a sustainable green economy.
